Spending crypto in the real world

Last reviewed: July 2026

You have crypto, but how do you use it to buy things in the real world? This page is about spending it. If what you want is to move it to your bank account, with what each path costs: How do I get my money to the bank?.

Options for spending crypto

1. Crypto debit cards

The most convenient option. They work like any debit card, but your balance is crypto.

Before comparing brands, the split that actually matters:

Custodial cardSelf-custody card
Who holds the balanceThe card companyYou, until the moment you spend
TypicallyAn exchange's card, tied to your account thereCharges against your own wallet

If the company shuts downYour balance is inside itYour balance is still yours

If you already have an exchange account and just want to spend, that same exchange's card is the path with the fewest new pieces. If what you want is to not hand over custody again, the self-custody family is the one — and it's also the one most worth testing with a small amount before you depend on it.

Verify availability yourself, for your country

It's normal to find a card claiming to work in "over 180 countries" whose fine print excludes yours. Issuers also discontinue products: Binance canceled its card in the European Economic Area in late 2023.

Before you count on one, confirm on the issuer's page which stablecoin and which network it accepts for loading, as well as your country. → How to check availability

  • You spend crypto without the merchant knowing
  • Cashback in crypto (some cards)

  • Limited availability by country
  • Conversion can carry fees

2. Direct payments to merchants

Some merchants accept crypto directly:

  • Travala: Travel and hotels
  • Bitrefill: Gift cards for Amazon, Netflix, etc.

About El Salvador

It's often cited as "the country where Bitcoin is legal tender." That stopped being the case in January 2025, as a condition of an agreement with the IMF: merchant acceptance became voluntary. There are still merchants that accept it, but it's no longer mandatory.

5. Send the payment from your wallet
